Giving his competitors a leg up

When American Paralympic snowboarder Mike Schultz lost his leg at 27 after a snowmobile accident, the long-time competitive athlete refused to give up doing what he loved. Regular prosthetics allowed him to walk, but he needed a much stronger, specialized device to compete at a high level.

So he built it himself.

Over three Paralympics, Schultz has medaled four times. Even more impressive? The vast majority of his competitors now wear the same leg prosthetic Schultz designed.
