Covering the bill from afar

Bentley’s Burgers and Fries in Nova Scotia took a routine phone order from someone with an American Southern accent, but no one ever picked it up. The food truck eventually gave the two burgers and fries to another patron, but that Southerner couldn’t let it go. They had ordered from the wrong Bentley’s and felt bad about stiffing them.

So the Southerner shocked the Canadians by sending an unsigned handwritten note via snail mail explaining the mistake and enclosing $40 in cash that more than covered the bill. Impressed by the sender’s honesty and sincerity, the burger joint owners vowed to use the excess to treat local kids to ice cream.

Especially in light of recent political tensions, it’s “nice to forge a human connection with one of Canada’s neighbours to the south,” said the owner. “Hope for humanity yet.”
